A message from our CEO
The social case for doing right by the community and environment is clear: being a responsible corporate citizen is the right thing to do.
But it's also the smart thing to do. Responsible stewardship of our most valuable resources – our investors, employees, community and our world – fortifies our marketplace and strengthens our business.
In all three of the areas of this report – empowering our team, building our communities and sustaining our world – a compelling business case matches our desire to be a responsible corporate citizen:
Empowering our team: Widely different experiences bring different perspectives,
which then become a springboard for innovative thinking. That's the foundation of our diversity and
inclusion journey, and we see its rewards in Rockwell Collins' strong global community and innovative
solutions. We're also proud that our journey has been recognized by DiversityInc, which included Rockwell
Collins among its Top 50 Companies for Diversity for the third consecutive year, and also listed us as one
of its 2012 Top 10 Companies for People With Disabilities.
However, that doesn't mean our journey is complete. In fact over the past year, we made significant progress
raising awareness of the value of hiring veterans and people with disabilities. We expanded our diversity
partner model to include such organizations as the Student Veterans of America and the U.S. Chamber's Hiring
our Heroes program. We also increased our level of engagement with the National Organization on Disability
and the Employer Assistance and Resource Network, seeking their counsel and guidance in driving efforts to
become a more educated and “disability friendly” company. Each of these organizations brings a unique
perspective to the table that we believe supports our long-term hiring and retention strategies, and helps
ensure Rockwell Collins will benefit from these talented employees' experiences and expertise.
Building our communities: A strong science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)
education clearly prepares young people for their future, and it also benefits Rockwell Collins by fostering
our next generation of enterprising engineers. To this end, we invest $2.25 million in STEM education each
year, along with the countless hours our employees contribute for everything from mentoring aspiring high
school engineers to introducing elementary school children to the wonders of science through the Rockwell
Collins Roadshow.
One of our primary ways of supporting STEM education is through our sponsorship of FIRST®, a global
organization dedicated to inspiring young people's interest and participation in science and technology.
It's a significant investment, but we believe the results will be significant, too. To better measure this
impact, we're co-sponsoring a five-year study by Brandeis University and FIRST to help us understand
how our support can best reap long-term rewards for students participating in FIRST.
Sustaining our world: We strongly believe that an investment in sustainability is
smart business. Global waste sorting and disposal projects have led to better community relationships and
cost savings. Projects to reduce water consumption in our manufacturing processes have reduced usage by 10
million gallons per year in our Cedar Rapids facilities. And we formed a Global Sustainability Team, which identified one of the largest
contributors to our carbon footprint – electricity consumption. By reducing that consumption (and that
footprint) through a multifaceted plan, we've saved millions of dollars in operating costs.
We're also creating technologies to help our nation's air traffic system meet future demands while
ultimately reducing aviation's environmental footprint. This system, called NextGen, will allow aircraft to
fly more efficient routes, saving fuel and reducing emissions.
Others are noticing our efforts. We're proud to be named, for the fourth year in a row, to the Dow Jones
Sustainability Index North America. Our inclusion in the index recognizes our commitment to sustainability
wherever we do business around the world.
As Rockwell Collins continues to grow domestically and globally, we pledge to maintain the highest ethical, environmental and social standards. Because it's right. Because it's smart. And because it's how a successful company – one committed to building trust every day – conducts itself now and far into the future.
